Zambia Agriculture Status Report 2024
The 2023/2024 agricultural season in Zambia was marked by challenges due to normal to below normal rainfall, consistent with conditions across much of Southern Africa. The northern region of Zambia experienced normal rainfall, while the
southern region faced delays in the onset of rains and extended dry spells, particularly from January to February. These adverse conditions, compounded by the effects of El Niño, severely impacted crop conditions, which failed to recover. Maize production was projected at 1.5 million metric tons (MT), a significant 53% decrease from the previous season's 3.2 million MT. Other crops, including soybeans, rice, and groundnuts, also recorded reduced production. Maize yields dropped to 0.68 MT/ha from 1.7 MT/ha in the previous season, largely due to late rains, dry spells, and pest infestations, such as armyworms
and stalk borers, in key provinces and delayed input acquisition.
