IAPRI Presentation: Media and Civil Society Engagement on Agricultural Sector Legal Reforms
IAPRI has been providing technical assistance to MoA implement a roadmap to carry out legal reforms in the agricultural sector to foster agricultural transformation through unlocking private sector investment. Specifically, the Ministry identified three inter-related agricultural laws that could enhance private sector operations in agricultural markets. These are: (1) the Food Reserve Act; (2) the Agricultural Credits Act; and (3) the draft Agricultural Marketing Bill.
IAPRI has also been sensitising the private sector and parliamentarians on the merits of the bills, the potential concerns and the viable safeguards. To expand the reach of the sensitisation process of bills, IAPRI proposes to host a knowledge sharing and exchange event with the Media and Civil Society Organization. The aim of the engagement was to share the objectives and expected outcomes and impacts of the reforms with the Media and CSOs. With this knowledge shared, the Media could begin to report on the reforms objectively, independently and from a knowledgeable base. In addition, through this platform, CSOs will have access to information and networking opportunities to amplify voices around the reforms. The opportunity could potentially inform future programming and interventions on DDF (other projects) and help craft advocacy messages to policymakers.
