Zambian Maize Outlook and Regional Analysis - 2019/2020
Climate change has dominated conversation this year. Poor rains, particularly in the south-west of the country led to a reduced maize harvest of 2,004,389 metric tons (MT) in the 2018/2019 season, a 16% decline from the previous season, and 32.5% from the five-year
historical average. This fall is despite a record high 1,560,00 hectares of maize being planted, demonstrating the country’s problematic= reliance on rain-fed agriculture for food security and the harmful effect of the crowding-out of commercial farmers who produced under 5% of maize this year, down from 8% in 2015
