Zambia agriculture status report – 2020

By Brian P. Mulenga, Mulako Kabisa, Antony Chapoto and Theresa Muyobela

The agricultural sector in Zambia plays a key role in providing livelihoods for the country’s population. It continues to be the biggest employer in the informal sector and provides the highest proportion of formal employment opportunities across all economic sectors in the country (CSO, 2019). The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in Zambia brought to light how critical the agricultural sector is to the livelihoods of so many. The enactment of health regulations to curb the spread of the pandemic that included movement restrictions, social distancing requirements and stay at home orders highlighted how day to day survival for so many requires their participation in the sector to make ends meet.
