Dr Mick S. Mwala holds a PhD degree in Plant Breeding from the University of Missouri-Columbia, USA. A graduate of the University of Zambia in 1976, he worked for the line of Agriculture as a breeder in oil crops (sunflower mainly) till 1991. During this period he rose to the position of Principal Agricultural Research Officer, discharging the duties of a Regional Coordinator - designate for Ago-ecological Region II of the country being in charge of organization, planning, and monitoring Agricultural Research Programmes in the Region in conformity with set national goals. In 1991 he joined the University of Zambia until to date. At the University Dr. Mwala held several positions of Assistant Dean (Undergraduate Programmes), Head of Crop Science Department and is currently the Dean of the School of Agricultural Sciences. Dr Mwala is author of numerous publications on agriculture and a widely experience consultant on agriculture in Zambia and the SADC region at large. He is the current Chairman of the IAPRI Board of Directors. Dr. Mwala has served on various bodies in different capacities thereby accumulating wide experience on agriculture in Zambia and the SADC region at large. He has been a member of the Regional Project Management Team for SCARDA - a SADC programme on Capacity Strengthening in Agricultural Research and Development in Africa (2008 to 2010); member of Technical Advisory Board of the Agriculture Support Programme of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives (US $ 15 million Sida funded project), 2005 – 2008; ISNAR Global Associate on training in Research Management 1999-2002; Chairman of the National Co-ordinating Committee for FARMESA-Zambia and Vice Chairman of the FARMESA Regional Co-ordinating Committee 1998-2000; A member of the Research Advisory Committee of the Golden Valley Research Trust 1996 -to 2002 and Chairman of the same Committee from 1998 -2000; A member of the National Research Advisory Committee of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee 1994 – 1998; Chairman of AGROTEC - a regional Project on appropriate technology development for the small scale farmers; A member of the Steering Committee for SADCC/ISNAR Agricultural Research Management and Training Project. 1990 to 1996, among others. Over the period, Dr Mwala has received notable Awards such as: 1. African Graduate Fellowship to pursue an MSc. (1978-80) 2. CIDA Award for Academic Excellence (1993). 3. Sabbatical Leave at CIMMYT - Zimbabwe, Harare. Zimbabwe (January 2003 - June 2004). 4. Recognition Certificate for Promotion of Postgraduate Training in Agriculture (2010).
